Why migration strategy matters
Schema changes can become outages when they are shipped without a deployment plan. In busy Laravel applications, safe migrations require backward-compatible code, phased rollouts, background data movement, and a rollback path.
Our baseline checklist
- Add nullable columns before writing to them.
- Backfill in batches with queue-aware monitoring.
- Deploy reads and writes in separate phases when contracts change.
